FAQ

About Molecular Hydrogen

What is Hydrogen Water?

Hydrogen water or hydrogen-rich water (also called hydrogen-enriched water) simply means normal water (H2O) that contains dissolved hydrogen gas (H2). For example, there are carbonated waters or beverages (soda pop), which contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO2), or oxygen water, which contains dissolved oxygen gas (O2). Similarly, you can have water that contains dissolved hydrogen gas.

Is hydrogen water similar to alkaline water?

Hydrogen water has the same pH as the water you used to produce the hydrogen water. The hydrogenation process does not change the pH of the water. If you prefer to drink alkaline water, you can use alkaline water in your hydrogen bottle.

Does hydrogen water taste different from normal water?

Hydrogen water typically does not have a distinct taste that differs from normal water. Since molecular hydrogen (H2) is a colourless, tasteless, and odourless gas, when it's dissolved in water, it generally does not alter the flavour profile of the water. People who drink hydrogen water usually report no significant difference in taste compared to regular water.

However, individual taste perceptions can vary, and some people might notice a very slight difference, much like how some people can distinguish between the mouthfeel of flat water and carbonated water.

When was hydrogen’s therapeutic benefits first discovered?

The therapeutic benefits of hydrogen gas were first noted in a scientific context in the late 18th century. However, it wasn't until much more recently that these benefits began to be seriously considered and investigated in medical and scientific research.

In 1975, a study by Dole and colleagues at the Baylor College of Medicine used hyperbaric hydrogen to treat mice with skin tumors, which yielded some promising results in terms of reducing tumor growth. This study marked an early instance of scientific research into the medical application of hydrogen.

The pivotal moment for the therapeutic use of hydrogen came in 2007 when an article was published by Dr. Shigeo Ohta in the journal "Nature Medicine." The study showed that hydrogen acted as a selective antioxidant, selectively reducing cytotoxic oxygen radicals in cells, which opened the door to the vast potential of hydrogen in therapeutic and clinical applications. This was when the concept of hydrogen-rich water and its potential health benefits started gaining significant attention.

Following this discovery, there has been increasing interest in the potential health benefits of molecular hydrogen, with research exploring its effects on various medical conditions, including its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties. The research is ongoing.

As of the end of 2022, this number had increased significantly, there were more than 2,000 publications on molecular hydrogen therapy according to data retrieved from the PubMed database,  many of which are original studies.  The numbers of new studies are increasing significantly, reflecting growing interest and research activity in this area over recent years.

Won’t dissolved hydrogen gas immediately escape out of the water?

Hydrogen gas begins to dissipate once infused into water, but it doesn't disappear all at once. The duration that hydrogen gas remains in water can remain for minutes to several hours, influenced by factors such as surface area exposure and movement of the liquid. Similar to how carbonated beverages hold onto their carbon dioxide (CO2) for a time before losing their fizz, hydrogen-enriched water retains its extra molecules for a period before they diminish to levels less likely to offer benefits. Therefore, it's advisable to consume hydrogen water shortly after its preparation to ensure you experience its full potential

For best results, please consume the hydrogen water within 10-15 minutes of hydrogenation, as the hydrogen content in the water decreases over time. Placing the water in a sealed stainless steel container immediately after hydrogenation will help preserve the hydrogen content for a longer period of time (up to a few hours).

When will I start noticing the effects of hydrogen water?

Right from the start you will notice you have more energy, are better hydrated, with improved general well-being, better digestion and better quality rest. But if you are talking about important improvements, you will only notice these after a few weeks or even months, if you manage to reduce oxidative stress, which is the cause of most illnesses and premature aging

The onset and noticeability of the effects of hydrogen water can vary widely from person to person, depending on individual health status, the concentration of hydrogen in the water, frequency of consumption, and personal sensitivity to changes in the body.

Some people might notice effects such as increased energy or improved alertness and better digestion relatively quickly, possibly within a few days to a week of regular consumption. Others may not notice these subtle changes as distinctly and may need to consume hydrogen water for a longer period, sometimes several weeks or even months, to perceive any benefits.

For certain health outcomes it may take a more extended period of consistent use to observe any noticeable changes. These effects could be subtle and not immediately apparent without specific medical testing. Similar to say taking vitamin C, you should not “notice” any real difference, even though the benefit has been proven by scientific research.

Is it possible to take an overdose of hydrogen-rich water?

It is not possible to overload water with hydrogen, It is safe to consume large quantities of hydrogen rich water, and any excess hydrogen will be excreted by the body as water.

How much hydrogen water should I drink a day?

The ideal hydrogen water intake may vary depending on intended use and user's specific needs. The recommended daily water intake is between 1-3 liters. Consuming more than one glass per day may already be beneficial for regulating oxidation levels. However, drinking 4 bottles or more (about 1.5 liters) of H Fizz hydrogen-rich water per day may provide better therapeutic benefits.

If it is your first time consuming hydrogen water, start with one bottle per day and gradually increase to four bottles over a week or two.  Some people may experience abdominal discomfort when they first start to drink hydrogen water. This should resolve over time. Otherwise, cut down the amount and only gradually increase again when you feel comfortable. Please reduce or stop consumption if you experience other symptoms or discomfort from drinking hydrogen water.

Can I drink hydrogen water instead of taking my medication or supplements?

No. We recommend hydrogen therapy as an on-going supplemental tool to maintain your health and your well-being. It should not replace any medication or other health supplements such as vitamins you are taking.

About H Fizz® Bottle

How do the bottles work?

All our hydrogen producing water products use a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) paired with Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE) electrolysis to split H2O and produce pure molecular hydrogen at high concentrations.

Are the bottles made of glass?

Yes, the body of our bottles are made from strong food-grade BPA free borosilicate glass.

Can I pour H2 water into another cup or container?

You may transfer your freshly hydrogenated water into an alternative container or stainless steel vessel. We recommend drinking the water within 15 minutes. If it is kept in a sealed stainless steel bottle/ container, the hydrogen level can remain high for several hours.

What happens to the oxygen?

All remaining oxygen gas is vented from the bottle so only pure molecular hydrogen becomes infused in your water.

How should I maintain and clean my H Fizz® water bottle?

Please make ozone water with the bottle twice a week to clean.

1. After a period of use, white scale may deposit on the body and at the base. To remove this, first add warm water into the bottle, and then add a small amount of vinegar or citric acid. Let it soak for a while and then wash out the scale with clean water. Making ozone water (see ‘making ozone water’ above for instruction) twice a week can also help reduce scale deposit.

2. When cleaning the generator or the base, water temperature should be below 95º C, in order not to cause damage to the components of the generator.

3. For general daily cleaning, wash the glass body and the cover with mild detergent water and leave to dry. Wipe clean the generator base with a dry cloth and do not put it under running water or soak it in water.

4. If H Fizz® bottle is not going to be used for a while, please add enough distilled water to cover the base electrolysis plate to keep it damp. Otherwise, extended drying may cause damage to the ion membrane.

Please refer to the instruction manual for further details.

What is the ozone water making function?

The bottle has an ozone water making function. This is used as a routine cleaning method for the hydrogen bottle. Doing this twice a week can effectively reduce scale and prolong the service life of the bottle. Ozone water can also be used as a mild antiseptic and to clean wound.

WARNING - DO NOT DRINK THE OZONE WATER!

To switch on the ozone water making function, press and hold the ‘on/off’ button until the generator makes a beeping sound. After five minutes, the generator will automatically turn off. During the process there will be a continuous beeping sound with flashing red light. Please refer to the instruction manual for further details.

What type of water should I use?

You can use various water sources including tap water, filtered water, and reverse osmosis, natural spring, purified, well, and distilled water. For best results, we recommend using distilled or purified water, bottled or canned mineral water. Do not put any beverages such as juice, tea or milk into the bottle because this may cause damage to the electrolysis plate.

Can I use hot or cold water?

We recommend using water less than 65 degree Celsius, room temp, cold water or iced water. DO NOT pour boiling hot water in your bottle or pitcher, as it may cause damage to the proton exchange membrane (PEM).

Doing so may void the warranty.

What do I do if my bottle has stopped producing bubbles?

If you received your bottle and it does not produce hydrogen bubbles, or it stopped. Fill your bottle or pitcher with warm water and allow the PEM unit located at the base to soak in water for 24 hours. This will prime the proton exchange membrane which may have dried out stopping it from working properly.

Why is my bottle leaking water?

Do not run the hydrogenation cycle for more than 3 times with the same water. Otherwise, due to high gas pressure produced inside the bottle, water will leak out from the waste gas vent or from the side of the bottle as a safety measure. If this happens, unscrew the top cap of the bottle, and pour out the water. Then tighten the connection between the glass body and generator base and pour in fresh water to start the process again. To reduce the chances of leakage, do not screw the cover of the bottle on too tightly during hydrogenation.

How often do I have to charge the bottle?

The bottle has a built-in lithium battery. A 5V/1A micro-type USB charger cable is provided for charging. Charging time is about 3 - 4 hours. When the bottle is fully charged, it can hydrogenate up to 8 to 10 cycles (depending on water quality).

If the light blinks red during hydrogenation, it indicates low battery, and the bottle needs charging.

What do the different light indicators mean (blue/red/green)?

The blue light will turn on during hydrogenation.
The red light will turn on during charging and turning green when the battery is full.
If the light blinks red during hydrogenation, it indicates low battery, and the bottle needs charging.

There are only a few gas bubbles produced during electrolysis

This is normal when the generator is being used for the first time, as the ion membrane is dry and the permeation effect may not be ideal, and hydrogen level production is not maximized at this time. This should improve after running the cycle several times. You can use warm water of about 50Cº to quicken the permeation of the ion membrane if the problem persists, please add half a bottle of water and let it sit for 8 to 24 hours to allow the water to entirely permeate the ion membrane.

Why is there residual water on the electrolysis plate when I first open the box?

This is normal as a small amount of purified water is used to wet the plate to prevent the ion membrane becoming too dry.
